In her own words, she is a makeup artist and creative director. Her background includes theater and performance art, both of which significantly influence her work. She enjoys building characters and working with musical artists, helping them define their visual identity. We simply adore Isamaya Ffrench, the power of her work and her personality.
All women have faced a struggle at one time or another. What was the biggest challenge in your life?
Probably the fight I had with myself while climbing to Everest Base Camp.
I was clearly suffering from altitude sickness and had to decide at one point whether to go back down or continue on. I had come all this way and was determined to see it through, so I continued to the summit. I was really sick when I came back, which taught me that sometimes it's more important to listen to your body rather than your ego! Something I still find difficult to do.
When do you feel you need to be strong?
We must learn to recognize that we are ultimately responsible for ourselves, support others, avoid judgment, and acknowledge our fears and weaknesses. Being vulnerable and aware of this is a real strength.
Made in turn of shadows and lights, such are women, echoing the moon that rules us. What is your share of light, what is your share of shadow?
I love this question. I've realized that once you're comfortable with your light and dark sides, they can become interchangeable; you can call on one or the other, or even both, if needed. For example, I tend to be very impatient, but the upside is that I can work on many projects very quickly. I can also be very blunt and direct, which can come across as insensitive to some. I see it as a straightforward and honest character; people can trust my straightforward opinions, and I appreciate that side of myself.
Express your most important conviction, the one that guides your steps in life.
Introspection and self-reflection. I think the conversations we have with others are just as important as going to art galleries and watching movies. They allow us to understand other ways of thinking and broaden our perspectives.
Mind upload. It marks the starting point for the story of our heroine Alyh, who uploads her mind into a universe in which she evolves and surpasses herself. What abilities would you develop if this adventure were offered to you? (Which should be the case in 2040.)
Gymnastics! Stretching your body can be much more difficult than stretching your mind... sometimes...
And if you had the power to change the course of things with a wave of a magic wand, would you do it?
I certainly wouldn't want to interfere with the narrative of the Universe. The slightest nuance can have a butterfly effect, and I'm convinced everything works through some strange cosmic interaction. The planet will take care of itself, even if it means kicking us at some point! I suppose in the short term, though, the wand would probably grant me any shoe I desire, and the space in my home to store them.
Never give up on… What would you say to your best friend or your child?
You can't always get what you want and get away with it ! My work can sometimes come across as aggressive, and I hate conflict. I believe there's always a way to manage everyone's expectations and work collaboratively to keep everyone happy. This goes for relationships and work!
The best… What are you most proud of in your career?
I am very happy to have managed to make myself known beyond artistic makeup, to work with people who trust me and in whom I deeply believe.
